What Is A Soft Tissue Injury?

If you have recently been in a car accident, you may have heard the term “soft tissue injury” thrown around lately. You may have asked yourself, what exactly is a soft tissue injury? A soft tissue injury is any injury to a muscle, ligament, or tendon. These softer areas of the body are injured following a traumatic event such as a car accident or a personal injury accident.

Car accidents are an extremely traumatic event for the body. The rapid change in direction can cause your body to absorb all of that force, which leads to a reaction known as muscle splinting. Today we take a closer look at the most common types of soft tissue injuries that people sustain from an accident.

Most Common Soft Tissue Injuries After A Car Accident

By far the most common soft tissue injury involved with car accidents is whiplash. That being said, there are many other wounds that can result from the impact, such as:

  • Sprains: a sprain can occur when the ligament is stretched too far or torn. Ligaments are strong bands of connective tissue that connect one bone to the other. The primary function of the ligament is to stabilize and support the joints of your body.
  • Contusions: contusion is the medical term for a bruise. These injuries happen as a result of a heavy force or blow to the underlying muscle fibers. When these fibers and connective tissues are crushed, it causes discoloration and a pooling of blood under the skin at the affected area.
  • Strains: Strains are similar to sprains in that they stretch or tear your tendons and muscles. Strains will cause pain, swelling, cramping, spasms, and muscle weakness. The most common ligament strain involved with car accidents is whiplash.

Whiplash usually occurs when you are impacted from the rear. The collision forces your neck and head to move forward and backward in a violent motion. Symptoms can include:

  • Stiff neck
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Memory loss and lack of concentration
